CHANGE, Inc. Celebrates Weatherization Month
Weirton, WV – During October, CHANGE, Inc. and other agencies across the nation are celebrating Weatherization Day on October 30, 2018. Throughout the month, CHANGE, Inc. will share information and energy saving tips across social media to raise awareness of the program, which plays a huge role in helping those in need in the local community.
With the cold weather approaching, most families across the country are turning up their thermostats to combat dropping temperatures. For low-income families, however, cranking up the heat is not always an option. These families pay 14.4% or more of their annual incomes for energy compared with only 3.3% for other non low-income families. Unable to pay big balances or hefty reconnection fees, some families are considering how they will survive this winter without heat.
The CHANGE, Inc.’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) can help. This program provides permanent solutions to reduce the energy burden on low-income families by installing cost-effective, energy-efficient materials and services while ensuring their health and safety.
“A family of four individuals could make as much as $50,200 in gross total annual household income and be eligible for assistance through the Weatherization Assistance Program,” stated David S. Ruhl, Weatherization Manager at CHANGE, Inc.
Since the inception of the program in 1976, more than 7.4 million homes have been weatherized across the nation. In 2019, CHANGE, Inc.’s program expects to weatherize more than 40 low-income homes. Since 2009 in the local area, 813 homes have received weatherization services. These households will save an average of $283 annually on their energy bills after weatherization work is completed.
“The dollar savings alone makes a big difference for these families. Weatherization makes homes warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and safer all year round,” stated Judy Raveaux, CEO at CHANGE, Inc.
