Homebuyer education workshops can help you turn the American dream into a reality. Studies have found clear benefits to receiving housing counseling before making your next move.
The decision to buy a home is certainly not one to be made lightly because owning a home requires a significant investment in time, energy, and money. Therefore, the best way to start the home-buying process is by taking a realistic look at what you can expect from homeownership and what owning your own home implies.
The housing counseling workshop provides participants with six hours of classroom instruction in the following areas:
- Are you ready to buy
- Managing your money
- Understanding credit
- Obtaining a mortgage loan
- Shopping for a home
- Protecting your investment
Utilizing the Neighbor Works “Realizing the American Dream” Prospective, homeowners learn the entire home-buying process from managing money and understanding credit to securing a mortgage loan and shopping for a home.
Workshops are held once a month at convenient locations throughout West Virginia’s northern panhandle. To take the class, the cost is $50 for an individual and $75 for a couple. If you have proof of financial hardship (Eligibility letter for adults from DHHR), the fee can be waived. Participants will receive the Realizing the American Dream manual and snacks and drinks will be provided.
Once the workshop is over, the participants will meet individually with a housing counselor to construct an individual household spending plan, with housing goals and timelines, review the manual worksheets and obtain a certificate of completion. Continuing financial education will be provided through West Virginia Saves program.
